Mihir and Vaishali Shah come from a family of wholesale jewelers and designers. Starting operations in 2003 purely as a wholesale gem and diamond importer and trading business, Rohan Jewelers branched into jewelry custom design and manufacture, initially for other retailers and recently, direct to customer.

Coming from India, Mihir and Vaishali have always viewed jewelry as more than just a luxury or vanity item. Since time immemorial, clients and investors have relied on jewelry as a store of value that could be pledged or sold during hard times. However, exorbitant retail markups, effectively nullify any potential  for preservation or growth in value over five or ten year horizons.  Mihir views this as the primary reason for the younger generations to be less interested in jewelry.

Being an astute observer of trends, Mihir also knows that the younger generations are not interested in owning a few, ultra-expensive pieces of jewelry and wearing them over and over again. Instead, most customers want to match jewelry to their ever-increasing wardrobe and also the occasion. Pieces must therefore be moderately priced, flexible to match or enhance colors, patterns and textures while also being suitable for casual and formal occasions.

Another trend that clients prize is the ability to start with an image or drawing of a jewelry that they may have seen elsewhere and describe their desired modifications to the same. However, most would not prefer to engage a custom designer with an exorbitant fee.  Mihir understands from his experience that the ability to make reasonable modifications to standard designs should not involve significant design charges.

 

Often times, clients have existing or inherited jewelry that they would like to refinish, improve, or completely melt and redesign. They are shocked to find that they have to spend significantly more than the price they paid even when the redesign is moderate and does not use additional material. Clients generally appreciate a process that offers full transparency into the value of their existing jewelry and the costs involved in redesigning new pieces.
